O dire­tor bri­tâ­nico Danny Boyle (de Trainspotting) é um dos res­pon­sá­veis pelo espe­tá­culo e esteve envol­vendo na esco­lha do reper­tó­rio. O Comitê Olímpico não quis se pro­nun­ciar sobre o documento.

São 86 músi­cas, que pri­vi­le­giam nomes da cena pop bri­tâ­nica recente e clás­si­cos dos Beatles, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Sex Pistols e New Order. Na lista, há ainda a rap­per M.I.A., Blur, Coldplay, Dizzee Rascal e Radiohead. Bandas que fize­ram parte do Jubileu da Rainha, como Eric Clapton e Elton John, foram dei­xa­dos de fora.

As Spice Girls não foram cha­ma­das e a Sporty Spice, Melanie C saiu recla­mando na imprensa. Outra polê­mica foi a inclu­são de “God Save The Queen”, uma faixa anti­mo­nar­quista, que cau­sou baru­lho quando lan­çada em 1977.
